Resort Features :Biggest and most modern ski area in eastern Europe, medieval old town, year round tourism, golf region
Bansko is probably now the best known ski resort in Bulgaria despite being the newest of the 3 major ski resorts in Bulgaria.
A sleepy medieval town set in the beautiful Razlog Valley in South West Bulgaria, it has been transformed over the past 5 years with huge financial investment and a building program which has created the biggest ski resort in Eastern Europe.
Originally a medieval town, the centre of Bansko is a delightful UNESCO world heritage site, set at the foot of the stunning Pirin Mountains. The opening of the superb high speed eight man gondola and huge investment in the pistes and ski left has created a modern resort that enjoys and excellent snow record with stunning views to the valley below. The skiing is characterised by many tree lined well groomed sweeping pistes with a good mix of red and blue runs. There is the famous Tomba black and a huge areas for the of piste adventurers to explore.
Bansko enjoys a deserved reputation as the best après ski resort in the country. More than a 100 local mehanas (restaurants) welcome clients to a lively folk evening and many bars, clubs and restaurants are open late for those wishing to burn the candle at both ends. It is a favourite winter and summer retreat for Sofians.
A significant building program has taken place with investors keen to exploit the areas potential and a large number of resort style apartments have been built. These very tremendously in terms of standard but importantly most are built with an attractive traditional alpine feel.
When the ski season finishes in May, a very green and pretty valley quickly emerges through the melting snow and the availability of summer activities increases by the year. Now a genuine all seasons resort Bansko now offers 1 golf course with many further planned, there is also opportunities to enjoy horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, white water rafting, fishing, wild board hunting, climbing and many more activities.
The area is well known also for it’s therapeutic Spa waters with 2 major spa villages Banya and Dobrinishte emerging. The fresh mountain air of the valley has been rated as the finest in Europe. The stunning scenery of a valley surrounded by 3 mountain ranges continues to attract investment and future plans for the region include the development of a local airport, 5 further golf course, a huge theme park and an eco resort.
Most significantly the Kulino ski area is currently being developed and combined with the planned extension to the ski area at Bansko should mean a genuine world class ski region is developing. Already a fixture for World Cup ski races, this region looks to have a bright future. Whilst there is still more investment in the infrastructure required this is very much ongoing.
